Where Villa Vista del Mar Sits

On a gated ridge of rainforest above Dominicalito Bay, just south of Dominical — secluded and high, with the ocean laid out below, and a waterfall reachable five minutes from the house.

The villa is set into mountain rainforest overlooking Dominicalito Bay, on Costa Rica's Southern Pacific coast, in a small gated community it shares with a few neighbouring homes — including Casa Frenchie, immediately next door. It feels genuinely remote, with jungle and ocean on every side, yet the beach, restaurants, and shops are about ten minutes down the hill, and a community waterfall is a five-minute walk away. For the region itself, see Where You Are: Costa Ballena.

Arrival & Access (the 4x4)

Like its neighbours on this ridge, Villa Vista del Mar sits up a steep jungle road and needs a genuine 4x4 — a two-wheel-drive car or low SUV won't make the climb. A driver who knows the way works just as well.

A true four-wheel-drive vehicle is required; the final stretch is steep, and best driven in daylight the first time. Most guests fly into San José (SJO) and drive about three and a half hours south, or take the short scenic flight to Quepos (Sansa or Green Airways) — a private plane for up to ten is an option — and continue by road. The team meets you off the main road and guides you up the last stretch; if a rental turns out to be the wrong vehicle, they'll sort a 4x4 taxi rather than leave you stuck. The full picture is in Roads, Rental Cars & Transportation and Getting Here.

“Loved the location. If you aren't familiar with Costa Rica, 4x4 is a must — you can't get those gorgeous ocean views without driving up the mountain!”Guest review · 5.0/5

The Home & Its Three Levels

A modern villa built over three levels and wrapped in glass — living and kitchen in the middle where you enter, the master alone on top, and three more bedrooms below opening straight onto the pool.

You enter on the middle level, which holds the open living space and a brand-new, well-equipped kitchen, all opening to the deck and the view; a 65-inch television and a large wrap-around couch anchor the room. The top level is given over entirely to the master suite — secluded, very large, with panoramic ocean-and-rainforest views and its own private deck. The bottom floor holds the other three bedrooms, each with its own balcony and direct access to the pool deck. It's a layout that gives the main couple real privacy up top while keeping the rest of the group together by the water below.

The Deck & Outdoor Living

The signature of the house: a deck that runs the entire length of the home, with two seating areas, a large teak dining table, and a barbecue with a bar top — all facing the sunset.

Outdoor living is where this villa shines. The wrap-around deck spans the full width of the house, with room to lounge, dine, and gather, and an outdoor BBQ bar set up to overlook the panorama while someone cooks. The sunsets over Dominicalito Bay are the evening event, and the deck is built around them. Inside and out, the home is designed so the view is never out of sight.

A few moments from around Villa Vista del Mar — the pool and the deck, the view, the living spaces. (Temporary listing photos — final photography to come.)

Bedrooms & Sleeping Arrangements

Four ocean-view bedrooms sleeping nine — a secluded top-floor master, and three rooms below by the pool, every one with blackout shades and its own balcony.

Every bedroom faces the rainforest and ocean, and every one has blackout shades — a detail guests ask about and appreciate after a tropical sunrise:

One honest note for planning: the master sits a floor above the other three bedrooms, which suits a lead couple wanting privacy but is worth knowing if you'd prefer everyone on one level. All three lower bedrooms open directly to the pool.

The Pool

A Bali-stone pool with a splash deck and in-pool seating — relaxed and family-friendly rather than a sheer infinity edge, with the three lower bedrooms opening straight onto it.

The pool deck is large, with a splash deck and in-pool bench seating, in-pool loungers, regular loungers, and umbrellas for shade — an easy, all-day spot to unwind after the beach while the sun goes down. Because the lower bedrooms open onto the pool, families travelling with children should still supervise closely around the water (more in Families & Multi-Generational Travel).

Kitchen, Food & Chef

A brand-new, well-equipped kitchen with American-grade appliances — and the seating to actually gather the group, with an island for three and a live-edge table that seats eight, plus the big teak table out on the deck.

The kitchen is built for cooking for the whole group, and the home seats everyone comfortably: a kitchen island for three, a large live-edge custom-wood dining table that seats eight indoors, and a large teak table outside on the deck. The team can arrange a private chef — several guests mention a first-night dinner cooked on arrival — along with grocery pre-stocking, in-villa massages, and the rest of the concierge service. The markets, fish vendors, and Dominical restaurants are covered in Food, Groceries, Chefs & Eating Well.

Weddings & Celebrations

With its full-length sunset deck and the bay below, Villa Vista del Mar makes a natural setting for a celebration — it has hosted a wedding, and pairs with Casa Frenchie next door when a wedding party needs more room.

The deck and the view do most of the work, and the home's exclusive use and indoor-outdoor flow suit a small event well. The team can arrange the chef, a dinner on the deck, in-villa massages, and the logistics around guests arriving up the mountain. For a larger wedding or reunion, the villa joins seamlessly with its immediate neighbour Casa Frenchie to form one much larger retreat (see below). Share your guest count and what you have in mind, and the team will advise on the setup.

Power, Wi-Fi & Practicalities

Two honest notes for a deep-jungle home: the area's power can dip briefly in heavy rain, and the villa has no window or door screens — so it runs on air conditioning with doors closed at night.

Like everywhere on this coast, area-wide power outages happen occasionally, usually after heavy rain, and are typically short; the team reports them to the power company as they occur. The home is gated and private, air-conditioned throughout, with Wi-Fi that's fine for messaging, streaming, and light remote work (heavy rain can briefly affect it). One genuinely useful thing to know: the villa has no insect screens on its windows and doors, so you keep them closed and run the A/C overnight — and, as in any rainforest home, the rare insect finding its way inside is part of being this immersed in nature.

Wildlife & Soundscape

This ridge sits in one of the most bio-diverse pockets on the planet — toucans, monkeys, and scarlet macaws pass by regularly, and the forest is the soundtrack.

From the deck and the bedrooms it's common to see toucans, monkeys, and scarlet macaws moving through the canopy, with birdsong through the day and deep quiet at night. Sightings vary by week and season, but the sense of living inside the rainforest — while staying in a modern, comfortable home — is a constant. More in Wildlife & Living in Nature.

What Guests Consistently Appreciate

What to Understand Before You Book

Three honest notes, so the home is exactly what you expect on arrival.

First, the 4x4 road is real and steep — a two-wheel-drive car won't make it, so plan a proper 4x4 or a driver, and arrive in daylight the first time. Second, this is a drive-to-everything home: the beach and town are about ten minutes down, with nothing within walking distance. Third, the home has no insect screens, so you'll run the A/C with doors closed at night, and the master sits a floor above the other bedrooms. None of these surprise a guest who's read them here — which is the whole point.

Who Villa Vista del Mar Suits (and Who May Prefer Another)

It suits families and groups of up to nine who want a modern, view-first home with great outdoor living — including families with children, thanks to the dedicated kids' room and the relaxed pool.

If you want ocean views from every room, a long sunset deck, a comfortable family-friendly pool, and a private gated setting — and you're fine with a 4x4 or a driver — this is a lovely fit, and it's a natural pairing with Casa Frenchie next door for a bigger group. You may prefer a different home if you need easy paved access with no 4x4, want to walk to the beach, need every bedroom on one level, or want insect screens to sleep with the doors open — in which case the team can point you to homes like Casa Colibri instead.

Larger Groups & Combining Homes

Villa Vista del Mar's immediate neighbour is Casa Frenchie — together they form one of the area's largest oceanview retreats, eleven bedrooms for up to twenty-seven guests, steps apart.

For a wedding, reunion, or retreat that outgrows nine beds, the two homes book together as a single stay, marketed as the Tropical Oceanview Retreat. A short drive up the same ridge is Casa Amigos, another option for spreading a larger group across comparable houses. The team can quote and coordinate any combination as one booking; more on grouping homes in Families & Multi-Generational Travel.

“Amazing property, very comfortable and modern. Amazing views from every room in the house. The house is just like the pictures. Beds are comfortable, AC in each room — perfect stay!”

Quick FAQ

Do I need a 4x4 to reach Villa Vista del Mar?

Yes — a genuine four-wheel-drive vehicle is required; a two-wheel-drive car or low SUV won't make the steep final climb. The team can also arrange a private driver and car service, and a 4x4 taxi if a rental turns out wrong.

How many guests does it sleep, and what's the bed layout?

Nine, in four ocean-view bedrooms: a top-floor master with a king, plus three lower bedrooms — one king, one queen, and one queen with a single bed above it (a great kids'/family room). Every room has blackout shades.

Where is the master, and is everyone on one level?

The master is secluded on its own top floor; the other three bedrooms are together on the bottom floor and open onto the pool. It gives a lead couple privacy but isn't single-level living.

Is there air conditioning and blackout shades?

Yes — air conditioning in every room, and blackout shades in every bedroom.

What kind of pool is it?

A Bali-stone pool with a splash deck and in-pool bench seating and loungers, plus umbrellas — relaxed and family-friendly, with the three lower bedrooms opening onto it.

Are there insect screens on the windows?

No — the villa has no window or door screens, so you keep them closed and run the air conditioning at night. As in any rainforest home, the occasional insect can find its way in.

How far is the beach and town?

About ten minutes down the hill by vehicle, and there's a community waterfall just five minutes from the house. Nothing is within walking distance.

Is there backup power if the electricity goes out?

Area-wide outages happen occasionally, usually after heavy rain, and are typically short; the team reports them to the power company as they occur.

Can you arrange a private chef and massages?

Yes — both are popular here, including a first-night dinner cooked on arrival. The team also handles grocery pre-stocking, drivers, and tours as concierge service.

Can it combine with Casa Frenchie for a larger group?

Yes — Casa Frenchie is the immediate neighbour, and the two book together as one retreat of eleven bedrooms for up to twenty-seven guests.

Are pets or smoking allowed?

No pets, and no smoking.

Where can I book Villa Vista del Mar?

You can book directly with Pura Villas — at puravillas.com or by messaging the team — and it's also on Airbnb and other platforms. It's the same villa and local team wherever you find it.

Where to Book & Booking Direct

You'll find Villa Vista del Mar on the major platforms — but booking directly with the local team is usually the best value, and always the most personal.

The home is featured on Airbnb and other villa portals, where it holds a perfect guest rating. It's the same villa wherever you discover it.

That said, a direct enquiry tends to serve you best. The large portals add their own service fees and taxes on top of the nightly rate; reaching the Pura Villas team directly often means a better rate, and always means a real person who can shape the stay — the chef, the driver, the 4x4, a wedding, or combining with Casa Frenchie next door for a larger group.

How to inquire

Start planning a stay at Villa Vista del Mar.

To check availability or to start planning a stay, the simplest path is to message the Pura Villas team directly. Responses typically arrive within a few hours from a local team member rather than an automated system, and questions about dates, group size, the road, the chef, a wedding, or combining with Casa Frenchie are answered personally.
